304L stainless steel, also known as ultra-low carbon stainless steel, is a versatile stainless steel material used extensively to make equipment and machinery requiring good overall performance (corrosion resistance and formability). 304L has oxidation resistance with a maximum temperature of 1650°F (899°C) continuously without significant scaling. The maximum temperature for intermittent exposure is 1500°F (816°C). Since 304L is an additional low-carbon variation of 304, it can usually be utilized in "welded" conditions (without annealing), even under severe corrosive conditions, except for the application of specified stress reliefs. 304L has good welding characteristics and can be welded by all standard methods, but care must be taken to avoid welding “thermal cracking”. After welding, annealing is also applied to relieve stresses during severe forming or spinning.
